LONDON, UK – The Best Female Solo Artist award at the 2012 BRIT awards looks set to go to eight-time Grammy award winner, Adele following her record-breaking year. The 23 year old enjoyed a stunning comeback performance at the Grammys last week following a five month break, due to vocal surgery, and the Tottenham singer completed a clean-sweep of six awards that night. She is set to perform a rendition of ‘Set Fire To The Rain’, at the O2 Arena on Tuesday, a venue that marked the start of her sensational year in the industry.
Adele is currently a best price of 1/5 (bet £5 to make £1 profit) with BetVictor and the betting suggests that this award is a one horse race. She released her second studio album entitled ‘21’ in January 2011 and this album was a number one hit in 26 countries across the globe. The single ‘Someone Like You’ was released in February and this shot to number one in the UK charts and Adele became the first living artist to achieve two top-five hits in both the UK Singles and Albums chart simultaneously since the Beatles in 1964. In July this single become the first song in this decade to sell over a million copies in the UK and this figure had soared to over 3 million by September. The album ‘21’ sold over 3.4 million copies and became the biggest-selling album of the 21st century, which is why it looks difficult to oppose this singing sensation, who is a class above her female rivals.
Next in the betting is Jessie J, who is a 5/1 chance with Betfred and Ladbrokes to walk away with this award. She has been nominated for three awards at this year’s BRITs and will perform two songs on Tuesday evening, ‘Who You Are’ and ‘Domino’. She was a winner of the Critics’ Choice award at the BRITs in 2011 and her best chance on Tuesday evening should be the Best British Breakthrough Act and she is avaliable at 2/1 with Ladbrokes in that category.
Florence and The Machine is a 20/1 shot with Ladbrokes and the 25 year-old art school dropout Florence Welch has seen a dramatic change since she swapped the paintbrush for a microphone. Florence and the Machine’s album ‘Lungs’ collected the MasterCard British Album of the year award at the BRITs back in 2010 and this was followed by a nomination for the Best British Single BRIT last year with ‘You’ve Got the Love’. The band released their second album ‘Ceremonials’ at the end of October 2011 and this reached number one in the UK Albums chart and peaked at number six in the US equivalent and the album is up for nomination in the  MasterCard British Album of the year award for which it is currently a 16/1 chance with sportingbet.
Kate Bush won the Best British Female BRIT award back in 1987 and is a 33/1 outsider with Betfred to collect the award this year. Since the 1980s she has become the standard for female singer-songwriters to be compared against and Bush become the first woman to have a UK number one with a self-written song ‘Wuthering Heights’ in 1978. She is back in the spotlight after releasing two albums, ‘Director’s Cut’ and ’50 Words For Snow’ after a six year break, with the latter one of the most anticipated album releases in 2011.
Another artist priced up at 33/1 with Ladbrokes is Laura Marling and this folk musician from Hampshire was the winner of the Best Female Solo Artist at the 2011 BRIT awards. She is nominated again this time around thanks to the release of her album ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’ but it would be a turn up for the books if she wins consecutive awards due to the strength of this year’s competition.
The 2012 BRIT Awards are on Tuesday 21st February at the O2 Arena in London. The ceremony is broadcast live on ITV1 from 20.00 GMT.
