Newcastle travel to Preston tonight hoping to go top of the Championship after seeing West Brom leapfrog them on Saturday, thrashing Bristol City 4-1. The Magpies need a win to go top of the league by two points and are in good form having won their last three league games. Preston, however, have not won in their last three and lost 2-0 to Watford last week to slide to twelfth in the table.
The visitors are favourites for the game at 5/4 (bet $40 to win $50 profit), leaving Preston as underdogs at 12/5. Newcastle have been good all season but their main strength has been their home form and in their last five away games they have suffered three defeats. The draw is priced at 12/5 and Preston`s last three home games have finished this way.The sides have never met before in the league.
The bookmakers have made a 1-1 draw the most likely score tonight, priced at 6/1. Next most likely is a 1-0 win for Newcastle at 7/1 and 2-0 is at 10/1. A 0-0 draw is at the same price and a much needed 1-0 win for the hosts is 17/2, with 2-0 at 17/1.
Newcastle`s Shola Ameobi is favourite to open the scoring tonight, priced at 6/1, having scored four goals in four appearances so far this season. Next are team-mates Andy Carroll and Marlon Harewood, both at 13/2 and Kevin Nolan, who has seven goals already, at 8/1. Preston`s best chance to score the first goal tonight is former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor at 7/1.
Newcastle are 3/1 to be winning at both half-time and full-time tonight and 9/2 to win after the scores are level at half-time. Both halves to be drawn is priced at 9/2 and Preston are 5/1 to be winning at both whistles. A comeback from Newcastle to win after falling behind at half-time is 28/1 and Newcastle/Preston is 35/1.
The visitor`s tonight are second favourites to win the Championship this season at 12/5, slightly behind West Brom, and are 4/6 to earn promotion to the Premier League. Preston, on the other hand, are 50/1 for the league but at 9/1 are given a good chance of challenging for promotion.
