Tour de France Stage 19 Odds and Betting Preview

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - Stage 19 of the Tour de France is the only time-trial of this year`s race - a 52km stroll alongside the river Garonne from Bordeuax to Pauillac. Whereas Mark Cavendish and Damiano Cunego dominated the sprinting and climbing stages betting respectively, the market for the time-trial has a different complexion.
Fabian Cancellara, who delighted favourite backers by winning this year`s Prologue at 8/13, heads the Stage 19 betting at 11/10 (bet £11 to win £10) with Paddy Power. The Swiss cyclist is by far the best in the field against the clock, and deserves to be short odds to record another victory. The only reason to oppose him is a small fitness question after the Pyrenees, but it is worth noting that Paddy Power also tried to take on Mark Cavendish in Stage 18 and they got it hopelessly wrong.
The second favourite is Alberto Contador in the yellow jersey, who is at 11/2 with Blue Square and Ladbrokes. Contador holds an eight second lead over rival Andy Schleck, and is a better at the time-trial discipline. Schleck is refusing to concede defeat, even though he is 27/1 on Betfair to win the Tour. He had his chance on Tourmalet, and is 150/1 with Stan James to win Stage 19.
Germany`s Tony Martin looks a solid each-way bet at 8/1 with Bet 365, given that he won the time-trials in the Tours of Switzerland and California this year. Martin finished an agonizing second to Cancellara in the Prologue, although he may have been flattered by the meteorological conditions.
Alexandre `Vino` Vinokourov has been unpopular in the betting at 18/1, hardly surprising seeing as he has already done his `job`: help Contador win yellow and perhaps win a stage for good measure.
Denis Menchov still has a chance of finishing on the podium in Paris, and his supporters will be expecting a titanic effort from the 25/1 shot.
Team Sky leader Bradley Wiggins has been recently cut by Blue Square from 18/1 into 16/1. Wiggins had been tipped for a podium finish, but this Tour has been one to forget for the Brit. Nevertheless he conserved energy in the mountains and is said to be focused on a stage victory. Given his motivation levels and his point to prove, he could be a decent wager to finish in the first three in Pauillac.
