Fabio Capello quits - Redknapp favourite to take over as England manager

LONDON, UK - With Fabio Capello resigning as England manager with immediate effect this evening the betting for Next Permanent England Manager has heated up considerably with Spurs manager Harry Redknapp slashed to 4/9 (bet £9 to make £4 profit) favourite with Paddy Power to lead his country at Euro 2012.
Redknapp has never denied his desire to one day manage England but he may feel his work with Tottenham Hotspur is not complete as they bid to challenge for the Premier League title this season. He is clearly the most popular choice amongst the general public in England and he will undoubtedly be on the FA's shortlist for the position.
Next in the betting is current England U-21 manager and British Olympic Team manager Stuart Pearce, who can be backed at best odds of 14/1 at BetVictor. An England legend, he would be a popular choice among the public in England.
West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson is next in the betting at best odds of 14/1 with Paddy Power and 888 Sport. Hodgson has international management experience having been in charge of Finland and Switzerland in the past.
Another Premier League manager in the mix is Alan Pardew, who is quoted at best odds of 16/1 at bet365 and Paddy Power to take over from Capello. The Newcastle United manager has done a fantastic job on Tyneside but has little other success to speak of apart from his work at Charlton Athletic in the late 90's and early 2000's.
The first non-English coach on the list is none other than José Mourinho who is unlikely to leave his post at Real Madrid as they look to win the La Liga and Champions League double this season. The Special One is top priced 16/1 shot at bet365, although he is as short as 9/1 with some firms.
Rafa Benitez is also on the list and can be backed at 20/1 with bet365 and Skybet to return to management with the England Job.
Arsene Wenger is available at top priced 25/1 with 888 Sport and Blue Square to leave his beloved Arsenal. Guus Hiddink is quoted at best odds of 40/1 with the same bookmakers.
Odds correct at the time of writing.

Think the next manager must be English though. Guus would probably do a good job but he might want John Terry to be captain after his Chelsea spell!

Mourinho probably a better shout for the Man United job - just got a feeling.

Personally, I'd vote for O'Neill. The guy's in a different class and NI is at least part of the UK, thus appeasing the patriots.

I think O'Neill would be a great choice but I think part of his genius lies in working with players day in day out, as Sunderland he has instilled belief in his players so quickly and that can only come from his constant presence in the club. I just hope that the Northern Irish are a forgiving bunch to him if he does get the job as I doubt the Welsh or Scottish public would be very pleased if a manager from their country took over the England job and ended up leading them to glory for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Nice bet, but as marooned79 says the market is "Next Permanent Manager". I can't see the Bookies paying out on Psycho given he's been appointed as "Temporary Manager".

"I can't take my eye off the ball at Tottenham at the moment because we're looking to get Champions League football, we're still in the FA Cup and I owe it to them to continue to keep completely focused on the job I'm doing here. It wouldn't be fair to anybody here if I started to let my thoughts wander elsewhere."
I.e. I've already taken my eye of the ball and can't wait to get started.
Redknapp's 64, had heart surgery, and is a die-hard patriot. I know you fellas all want to lay the hell out of him on Betfair, but I wouldn't touch this market with a barge pole. If anything I'd back him at the current price of 1.54.

Redknapp has done a great job with Spurs but is it any better than the job Hodgson did at Fulham?
I just don't see Redknapp as an international manager. He may well get the job and I agree with Ed 1.54 is probably a back rather than a lay because the FA seem to have made their mind up, but that doesn't mean it's the right decision long term.

Yes. Far better. Look where they were, look where they are, look what they've spent. Hodgson's Fulham efforts were exaggerated in hindsight after his flukey Europa League run.
