UEFA Europa League football - Valencia vs Werder Bremen
By Matt Knowles on 2010-03-11 18:00:53
Werder Bremen travel to Valencia tonight in the first leg of their last-sixteen Europa League tie. The visitors are sixth in the Bundesliga and will hope to improve on their 2-2 draw with Stuttgart last time out. Valencia are third in La Liga, behind only Barcelona and Real Madrid but will be hungry for some European success.
The hosts are favourites for the game at 5/6 (bet £60 to win £50 profit), leaving Bremen as underdogs at 7/2. Neither has been in great form, with Valencia winning only two of their last seven league matches. Bremen have won only three of their last twelve league games, losing five and drawing four. The draw is at 13/5 tonight.
The bookmakers believe the two sides are very similar and a 1-1 draw has been made the favourite score for the match at 7/1 with Skybet, slightly ahead of a 1-0 win for Valencia at 15/2, with 2-0 at 17/2. A 0-0 draw is available at 12/1, with a surprise 1-0 win for Bremen at the same price. Last time the teams met was in July last year and two second-half goals from Zigic earned Valencia a 2-2 draw in Germany. A repeat of that score tonight is at 18/1.
Spanish superstar David Villa has been made favourite to open the scoring tonight at 4/1. The Valencia striker has scored nineteen goals already this season and is only two behind Lionel Messi in the La Liga scoring charts. Next is Juan Mata at 13/2, with Zigic, who scored twice in Germany, available at the same price with Coral and David Silva is at 7/1. Bremen`s best chance of opening the scoring is deemed to be former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and the Peruvan is 8/1 to break the deadlock tonight.
Valencia are 2/1 to lead tonight at both half-time and full-time and 7/2 to in the match after drawing at half-time. The bookmakers offer 5/1 that both halves end in a draw and Bremen are 8/1 to be winning at both the interval and the final whistle. Draw/Bremen is available at 10/1 with Skybet.
Both teams are very much in the frame to win the Europa League but Valencia are given the better chance of the two and are third favourites at 8/1, with their opponents tonight at 14/1.
