UEFA Europa League football - Lille vs Liverpool
By Matt Knowles on 2010-03-11 17:00:32
Liverpool have seen their hopes of winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup dashed this season. Tonight they travel to Lille in the hope of giving something back to their fans, who will surely be dismayed by the plight of their club, who now look unlikely to even qualify for any competition stronger than this one next season. Even with Steven Gerrard and Fernanado Torres, the Reds crashed to defeat on Monday against lowly Wigan, and tonight`s opposition look to be tougher.
The Merseysiders go into the game as favourites at 6/4 (bet £40 to win £60 profit) with Canbet, leaving Lille as home underdogs at 21/10 with Totesport, and the draw is 23/10 with the same firm. Liverpool have won three of their last five games but they have not been convincing, coming over Blackburn and twice over Unirea Urziceni. Lille have also been disappointing recently and although they are fifth in their league they have only won three of their last seven matches, last time out drawing 1-1 with Saint-Etienne.
The bookmakers believe the match will be close and have made a 1-1 draw the most likely score for the game at 6/1 with Canbet, followed by a 1-0 win for the visitors at 7/1. A 0-0 draw is available at 17/2 and a 1-0 home win is at the same price. A more impressive 2-0 win for Rafa Benitez`s ailing side is 11/1 and the same result for tonight`s hosts is 18/1 with Skybet.
Fernando Torres, who has returned from injury after a frustrating season, has been made 9/2 favourite to open the scoring tonight, followed by Netherlands international Dirk Kuyt at 7/1. PA Frau is seen as Lille`s best chance of scoring the game`s first goal and the French striker is 15/2 to d the honours. Reds captain Steven Gerrard has not quite been the inspiration he usually is but he is 8/1 with Bet365 to break the deadlock tonight.
Liverpool are 10/3 to lead tonight at both half-time and full-time and 5/1 with William Hill to win the match after drawing at half-time. The bookmakers offer 4/1 that both halves end in a draw and Lille are available at 9/2 to be winning at both the interval and the final whistle tonight. Draw.Lille is at 7/1 with Skybet.
Rafa Benitez will be desperate to take something from this disappointing season and his side are favourites to win the Europa League this season at 11/2. Lille are not given a great chance but at 33/1 the task they face is not impossible.
