FA Cup football - Manchester United vs Leeds
By Matt Knowles on 2010-01-03 12:26:16
Manchester United welcoming Leeds to Old Trafford used to one of the biggest matches in the country but tonight it may be a mismatch as the League One side face the reigning Premier League Champions. The visitors are in good form going into the game as runaway leaders in the third tier of English football, winning their last three games, but Sir Alex Ferguson`s side will be very confident of getting the right result today and should be buoyed by their 5-0 win over Wigan last time out.
The hosts are comfortable favourites for the match at 2/7 (bet $70 to win $20 profit), leaving Leeds as big underdogs at 12/1. The draw is priced at 11/2 but Manchester United have only drawn one game all season in domestic competitions. Leeds, however, have drawn two of their past five games.
The bookmakers seem to think a comfortable home win is on the cards and have made a 2-0 win for Manchester the most likely result at 11/2, with 3-0 at 7/1. A 1-1 draw, which would be a great result for Leeds, is at 12/1 and a shock 1-0 win for the visitors is available at 30/1.
England star Wayne Rooney is favourite to open the scoring tonight at 11/4, slightly ahead of former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen at 7/2. The United manager may, however, choose to go with some younger players today, and Federico Macheda is available at 9/2. Leeds` best chance of scoring the first goal comes from highly rated forward Jermaine Beckford at 9/1.
Manchester United are 8/11 to lead at both half-time and full-time today and 7/2 to win the match after the scores are level at the interval. The bookmakers offer 9/1 that both halves are drawn and Leeds United are priced at 33/1 to be winning at both the half-time and full-time whistles.
The men from Old Trafford are a strong outfit and have been made second favourites to lift the FA Cup this season at 9/2. Leeds`s odds of 500/1 do not quite reflect their quality, as they face such a difficult challenge today.
