The Open Betting Odds: Lee Westwood and Justin Rose favourites to be Top Englishman

ST ANDREWS, SCOTLAND – Tiger Woods may be favourite to win this week`s 139th Open Championship, but Lee Westwood currently heads the betting for the Top Englishman. Westwood finished third in last year`s Open, but the way the bookmakers have been pricing up this year`s runners, they are giving Westwood every chance of giving Tiger a run for his money.
Westwood is 100/30 (bet £30 to win £100 profit) with Stan James and Bet 365 to beat off the English opposition, but punters may be worried about a leg muscle injury. Lee has made it known that he would be resting this week if it was not for the Open, so he may not be the shrewdest bet at short odds. That said he won the St. Jude Classic in Memphis and has arguably been the most consistent golfer in the last 12 months.
Fellow Englishman Justin Rose makes plenty of appeal at 4/1 with Totesport, especially after two PGA Tour wins in the space of five weeks. Rose has finished 12th and 13th in two of the last three Open Championships, but his supporters will be hoping that he finally comes of age this year to continue his dazzling run of form.
The third choice for golf bettors is Ian Poulter, who is an 11/2 chance with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power. Poulter finished 11th in the last Open to take place at St Andrews, but pundits argue that he now has the variety in his game to make a major impact.
Paul Casey has been a popular pick at 7/1 with Victor Chandler, despite the fact that he missed the cut in the 2000 Open which also took place at St Andrews. Also available to back at the 7/1 mark is Ross Fisher, who recently finished runner-up in the BMW International Open.
Next is Chris Wood at 14/1, but the one for money has been Robert Rock. Rock made the cut at St Andrews five years ago, and he has finished in the `each-way` places four times this season. That consistency means that has been trimmed to 35/1 from 40/1 by Boylesports.
Finally the rank outsider in the Top Englishman market is Tyrrell Hatton at 300/1 with Sky Bet, who is only 18-years-old and bagged his St Andrews spot through the Ladybank qualifier.
