The Malaysian Open will be held this year at the Saujana Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur. The par 72 course is 7,000 yards long, with wide fairways and small greens. While many of the European Tour`s top golfers are in Florida for the Honda Classic, there are still some very strong players out there and the event has been won before by the likes of Lee Westwood and Vijay Singh.
Asian number one Thongchai Jaidee has been made favourite for the tournament at 9/1. Jaidee had two wins on the European Tour last year, in the Indonesia Open and the Ballantine`s Championship, and has started 2010 well, coming third in the Dubai Desert Classic and tying for fifth in the Accenture Match Play Championship. Jaidee also won this tournament in 2004 and 2005, so should know the course. At 44th in the world, he is the highest ranked participant in this year`s event, and will take some beating.
Some have speculated that the humid weather in Malaysia will give work in the favour of Asian players and following Jaidee is the South Korean KJ Choi, at 16/1. Choi has every reason to be disappointed with his performances in 2009, recording only one top-ten finish on the PGA Tour. His return to the Asian Tour for the Iskandar Johor Open was a winning one, but the level of competition was very poor indeed. However, he will hope to improve in 2010, and now would be a good chance to record only his second win on the European Tour.
Soren Hansen is next at 18/1. Hansen is ranked fiftieth in the World but has only had two wins on the European Tour so far, coming a long time apart in 2002 and 2007. However, the Dane, who in August 2009 was charged with tax evasion, is never too far off, coming T-8th in both the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the South African Open and T-6th in the Joburg Open.
Another player who has recently been sticking around in tournament is Chris Wood. Wood finished tied for third in the Open Championship and has already recorded three top-twenty finishes in 2010. At 22 years old, he will surely improve, and this may be the time to do it against a fairly weak field.
Other notable players taking part include Darren Clarke at 25/1, who finished 2nd in the Joburg Open, and David Horsey at 33/1, who has three top-twenty finishes already this year and came T-8th in the Abu Dhabi World Championship.
The prize purse the Malaysian Open is $2,000,000. The first match tees off at 11.50 pm, as the UK is eight hourse behind Malaysia.
