Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Betting 2009

Today is the first day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Fife, Scotland. The tournament is played over three  different Links courses, one of which is St. Andrews, the `home of golf`. While the tournament was only established in 2001, it is one of the richest on the European Tour.

Padraig Harrington is the favourite for the tournament at 8/1 (bet $10 to win $80 profit). The Irishman has already won they young tournament twice, and both times he has also been part of the winning Pro-Am team. Harrington finished joint thirteenth last year at five under par. Bookmakers offer 15/8 that he finishes in the top five this year.

Next favourite is Rory Mcilroy, who is rumoured to be considering joining the PGA Tour next season, at 12/1. The 20 year-old from Northern Ireland finished joint eighth last year, six under par, and is priced at 5/2 to finish in the top five.

Englishman Lee Westwood was level with Mcilroy last year and is priced at 16/1. In 2003, Westwood won this tournament and set a record aggregate score of 267 which is yet to be broken. He is 3/1 to finish in the top five. Ross Fisher, joint runner-up last year is also at 16/1 and is 10/3 to place in the top five again.

Ernie Els, the South African nicknamed `The Big Easy` is priced at 25/1 to win and 3/1 to place in the top five. Els has ranked in the world top ten for a record 750 weeks in the Official World Golf Rankings and has been top, but last year in this tournament he finished an uncharacteristically low joint hundred and first.

Last year`s winner Robert Karlsson is priced at 55/1 to repeat that success.
