MELBOURNE, Australia - Dunaden just beat Red Cadeaux in a photograph to win the 2012 Melbourne Cup. The nose margin of victory was the closest ever in the history of Australia's most famous race and the official photograph showed that the winner had won by just a pixel. The result had taken several minutes for the judge to reach his decision.
The Mikel Delzangles-trained French raider was returned at 8.1/1. Ed Dunlop's English raider Red Cadeaux was returned at 30/1 with German horse Lucas Cranach was third at 12/1, one and a quarter lengths back. The 4/1 favourite Americain was a fast finishing fourth, a neck down.
Christophe Lemaire was the winning jockey in the 151st running of the Melbourne Cup. Dunaden had previously won the Geelong Cup on route to the Melbourne Cup.
Ed Dunlop vowed to return in 2012 with Red Cadeaux in an attempt to go one better.
