The NBA season is in full swing now and the main focus for the Championship is on three teams :Ā The LA Lakers, led by Kobe Bryant, the star-studded Boston Celtics and Lebron James` Cleveland Cavaliers.
Los Angeles, last year`s NBA Champions, have jumped out to a significant lead in the Western Conference and currently hold the best record in the league with a win percentage of .800. Kobe Bryant has led the team in scoring and his average of 29 points per game is the second highest in the NBA. Bryant was also named joint player of the month for December. Los Angeles are favourites at 12/5 to win a sixteenth NBA Championship this year.
The Bolton Celtics are the next most likely team at 3/1. Their trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have all scored consistently in this league for years and this season is no exception. Boston`s vast array of talent has seen them rise to lead the Eastern Conference with a winning percentage of .758. The emergence of Rajon Rondo has struck even more fear into their opponents and only the San Antonio Spurs have been as successful over the last ten games, of which the Celtics have won eight.
In recent years the Cleveland Cavaliers have been seen by many as a one-man team carried by the efforts of Lebron James, who shared the December Player of the Month award with Kobe Bryant. James has averaged twenty-eight points and seven rebounds per game this season but has also been supported by players of the calibre of Shaquille O`Niell and Mo Williams, giving Cleveland another dimension on both offence and defence. The Cavaliers are third favourites for the Championship this year, priced at 9/2.
Some other notable teams include the Orlando Magic and the Denver Nuggets at 9/1 and 12/1 respectively who both top their divisions despite their shaky road records. Denver`s Carmelo Anthony is the league`s top scorer so far this season and Orlando`s Vince Carter and Dwight Howard are enjoying arguable the best season of their careers. The San Antonio Spurs are at 16/1 and are in a rich vein of form and can never be overlooked when it comes to the post-season.
The New Jersey Nets are seen as the league`s worst team, priced at 2500/1 for this year`s title having won only three games this season.
