NCAA Orange Bowl - Iowa Hawkeyes vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
By Matt Knowles on 2010-01-06 00:05:21
LandShark stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, will host the seventy-sixth annual Orange Bowl tonight as the Iowa Hawkeyes face the Atlantic Coast Conference Champions, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Orange Bowl is the second oldest Bowl game in America, having first been held in 1935.
Iowa have not appeared in a Bowl game since the 2003 Orange Bowl, where they lost 38-17 to the USC Trojans. They were 4.5 point underdogs and they are underdogs again today, priced at +188 (bet $100 to win $188 profit) on the money line and at +5 points against the spread.
Georgia Tech have gone even longer without playing in a major Bowl, with their drought lasting since 1967. They are, however, favourites to win tonight at -200 (bet $200 to win $100 profit) on the money line and -5 points against the spread.
Betting so far on the money line has favoured the Hawkeyes, with 79% of money backing the ACC Champions to spring and upset tonight and with straight up against the Yellow Jackets. Betting against the spread has been far more evenly matched, with 52% of money so far behind the 2003 runners-up.
The teams go into the game with similar records both on the field and against the spread, with Iowa winning at 10-2 and 7-4 against the spread, and Georgia Tech 11-2 on the field while covering at 8-4. Iowa, however, built their success on defence, giving up only 15.5 points per game to Georgia Tech`s 24.8, while the Yellow Jackets hugely outscored the Hawkeyes with 35.3 PPG to their opponents` 23.1 PPG.
The Over/Under total for the game has been set at 50.5 points for the game and betting so far has seen 59% of action backing the Under. This seems reasonable as both teams leaned slightly toward the Under during the season, with a combined twelve Unders, nine Overs and one push.
