Real Madrid's expensively-assembled squad will look to justify their remarkable price-tags tonight as the new Galacticos face Lyon in the Champions League. The four most expensive players in Madrid's side alone cost £200 million this summer but the Spanish Giants are facing yet another humiliating exit at this stage of the competition. Manuel Pelligrini's side have now gone top of La Liga but many believe the Chilean will need to deliver Europe's most prestigious title to keep his job.

Arsenal take on Porto tonight at the Emirates, hoping to overcome a 2-1 deficit sustained from the first leg. Their task is made harder by the fact that their talismanic captain Cesc Fabregas will be missing, after he sustained a hamstring injury in the win over Burnley on Saturday. Manuel Almunia will captain the side in his absence.

French Champions Bordeaux travel to Olympiakos tonight in the first leg of their first knock out round clash. Bordeaux have been performing well this season, and are currently top of Ligue 1, three points ahead with a game in hand. Olympiakos are coming second in the Greek Super League, two points behind arch-rivals Panathinaikos.

European champions Barcelona travel to Stuttgart tonight, as they continue their defence of the Champions League. Barca came through top in a tough group, with Inter Milan and Rubin Kazan providing stern opposition. Since their last European match, Barca have been in fine form, winning the Club World Championship and staying at the top of La Liga.

Porto host Arsenal tonight, in the first leg of their first knock-out round clash. The Gunners will be missing a host of first team players, but will still be confident of getting a favourable result to put them in a good position for the second round.

Real Madrid travel to the Stade Gerland tonight as they face Lyon in the first Champions League knockout stage. Real enter the match on a high, having made up ground on La Liga rivals Barcelona, who lost this weekend. Real thrashed Xerex 3-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice, and are now only two points behind Barca.

Manchester United travel to Italy tonight in a mouth-watering clash that sees former United star David Beckham face his former club for the first time. United have lost to Milan on all four occasions that the two have met in a two-legged clash, and Sir Alex Ferguson will be eager to get revenge against the team who tore United apart three years ago.

After a long wait, the knock-out round of the Champions League starts tomorrow, with matches between AC Milan and Manchester United, and Lyon and Real Madrid, before the other matches this week or next week. Teams have fared differently during the break since their last European matches, and will go into these fixtures with differing degrees of confidence.
