ATP Valencia Open – Murray returns after long absence

Posted in Sports, Tennis on November 2, 2009 @ 12:08 pm by Harry Maude

Britain’s Andy Murray returns to tennis this week after missing events in China and Japan with a wrist injury. He will be looking to gain important match practice ahead of the World Tour Finals at the end of the month.

Murray is heavy favourite for the tournament, priced at 13/8 (bet $80 to make $130 profit). Nikolay Davydenko is second favourite following a fine run of form which has seen him win the Malaysian Open and the China Open, where he beat Rafael Nadal in the final. He is priced at 10/3.

Fernando Verdasco and Joe Wilfried Tsonga are next, priced at 10/1 and 11/1 respectively. Verdasco currently holds the no. 8 spot- the last qualification place for the World Tour Finals, but he is not far ahead of Tsonga who can overtake him with a favourable result here. Tsonga has been in good form recently, winning the Japan Open as well as a doubles title in Shanghai.

The other contenders include Gilles Simon who is at 16/1, Gael Monfils at 18/1, Tomas Berdych at 20/1, David Ferrer at 25/1 and Feliciano Lopez at 33/1.

Murray’s potential competition is lessened by the ATP event in Basel which also takes place this week, in which Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are taking part. Murray’s first match is against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who he is 1/14 favourite to beat.
