The second of the Australian Open quarter-finals takes place tonight, with big-hitters Andy Roddick and Marin Cilic set to slug it out for a place in the semi-final. Both players came through five set matches to make it this far, with Roddick coming back from 2-1 down to beat Fernando Gonzalez and Cilic knocking fourth seed Juan Martin del Potro out.
Roddick is favourite for the match, priced at 4/6 (bet $60 to make $40 profit), while Cilic is at 7/5. In terms of set betting the favourite result is a 3-1 win for Roddick, priced at 10/3. Roddick is priced at 7/2 to win in straight sets and 6/1 to win in five sets. Cilic is priced at 5/1 to win 3-1, 13/2 to win 3-0 and 7/1 to win 3-2.
The two players have played each other twice, with one win apiece. The last time they played was in Canada in 2008, when Cilic came out on top, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. However, this was during the rough patch of Roddick’s career, and he looked a different proposition last year.
At one point in his match against Gonzalez, Roddick was struggling against the baseline firepower of the Chilean, and he is likely to face more of the same from Cilic, who hit Andy Murray off the court when they met at last year’s US Open. Despite the battering that Roddick took at some points from Gonzalez, he managed to come through, and he has the advantage over Murray in that he can rely more on holding his serve.
The winner of this match will play the winner of the Nadal vs Murray match, which takes place tomorrow morning. Both of these players are among the outsiders for the tournament, with Roddick priced at 18/1 to win, and Cilic at 25/1.
