English Premiership football – Sunderland vs Stoke City

Posted in English Premiership, Soccer, Sports on February 1, 2010 @ 6:30 pm by Harry Maude

Sunderland take on Stoke in tonight’s Premiership game, hoping to put an end to the nightmare run of form which has seen them concede 11 goals in their past three matches, and pick up only three points from the last available 27. Stoke are in slightly better form, having knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup last week, but their away form has been atrocious this season, and they have only scored four goals on the road so far this season.

Steve Bruce’s side will be boosted by the return of Craig Gordon in goal, and Lee Cattermole should also be fit to play. Sunderland are favourites for the game, priced at 23/20 (bet £200 to make £230 profit), while Stoke are at 11/4. The price for Sunderland looks to be fairly generous, considering Stoke’s dire away form, which has seen them win only three of their 29 away matches since promotion. The draw is priced at 12/5.

Despite Stoke’s lack of prowess in front of goal, Sunderland’s leaky defence could compensate for this, as Sunderland have not kept a clean sheet in ten games. The favourite result is a 1-1 draw, at 6/1, which reflects both teams’ deficiencies. A 1-0 Sunderland win is priced at 7/1, while a goalless draw is at 9/1. A 2-0 and 2-1 victory for Sunderland are both priced at 9/1, and a 1-0 Stoke win is at 10/1.

On the half time / full time market, Sunderland / Sunderland is the favourite result, priced at 13/5. Draw / Sunderland is priced at 9/2, with draw / draw at 5/1. Stoke / Stoke is priced at 6/1.

Darren Bent, who is the league’s third top goalscorer, is the favourite to open the scoring, priced at 9/2. He is followed by Trinidad striker Kenwyne Jones who is at 6/1. Frazier Campbell is at 7/1, with Stoke’s Ricardo Fuller their best hope at 7/1. Stoke’s other strikers Sanli Tuncay and James Beattie are priced at 8/1 and 9/1 respectively.

Despite the two teams’ seemingly safe league positions of twelfth and thirteenth, in reality Stoke are five points away from the relegation zone and Sunderland are only three, because the bottom half of the table is so clumped. However, neither are seen to have anything to fear about going down, with both teams priced at 14/1 to be relegated.
