Following the news that John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy, after revelations about his private life were made public this week. Terry met with England manager Fabio Capello at Wembley today, and the news broke soon after. There is now intense speculation over who will replace Terry as England captain at such a crucial stage in the World Cup preparations.
Rio Ferdinand is currently the market leader on Betfair to be the next captain, after Fabio Capello said “When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain (Rio Ferdinand) and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.” Ferdinand is now priced at 1.25, in from a high price of 9.8.
Steven Gerrard is second favourite at 8.2, while Wayne Rooney is at 10.0. Terry’s Chelsea team mate Frank Lampard is an outsider at 22, while Terry himself is now at 34 for an unlikely return. Gareth Barry is at 65, while David Beckham is also 65 for a shock return.
Ladbrokes are also offering 6/4 that Terry will not start England’s next game against Egypt, and also earlier had Gerrard odds on at 4/7 to be the next captain.
