Miami’s Sun Life Stadium tonight plays host to one of the most hotly-anticipated Super Bowls in recent memory as Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts face the New Orlewans Saints.
Both teams started the season looking to become the first team to win the Super Bowl after an undefeated season and went 13-0 before resting key players late in their schedules. However, those few defeats were quickly forgotten and the teams surged through the play-offs, with Indy beating Baltimore and New York and the Saints overcoming the Vikings after thrashing Arizona.
Indianapolis have been made favourites for the game on the money line at -200 (bet $200 to win $100 profit), leaving the Saints as underdogs at +180 (bet $100 to win $180 profit). Betting on the money line so far has been fairly even with 56% of money backnig the New Orleans to cause an upset and win the Super Bowl on their first visit to it.
The points spread for the game has been set at five points after considerable movement, making the Colts favourites at -5 points and giving the Saints a handicap of +5 points. Betting against the spread has favoured the Colts, with 66% of action backing them to cover and last time the teams met they blew out the Saints 41-10. However, the team they face today is a very different prospect to that of 2007.
Despite the Saints impressive record of 15-3 this season, they have only managed to cover the spread at 9-9, while the Colts have covered at 12-5 -1 after going 16-2 on the field. It is worth noting that the Colts have covered at 6-2 in their last eight play-off games.
The Over/Under total for the game is set at 57 points and betting so far has seen 69% of money backing the Over. The teams have leaned slightly Over, with nineteen Overs and seventeen Unders between them, and both teams play a passing offence. However, some have speculated that as the teams are evenly matched they may spend some time feeling each other out.
The MVP market has been dominated by Peyton Manning so far and the Colts’ main man is 10/11 to win the honour. Opposing quarterback Drew Brees is second favourite at 10/3, with tight end Dallas Clark and wide receiver Reggie Wayne both 16/1.
The Super Bowl kicks off at 6 p.m Eastern time.
