Super Bowl point spread betting and prop bets

Posted in NFL Football, Sports on February 7, 2010 @ 9:21 pm by Richard Hutchinson

MIAMI, FLORIDA – The Super Bowl is a great opportunity for bookmakers to dream up a huge variety of prop bets and this year’s contest between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts has seen them produce thousands of betting options.

The plain vanilla betting line sees the Saints given a five point start on the point spread and the Colts give up five. The money line has the Saints +170 (bet $100 to make $170 profit) while the Colts are -200 (bet $200 to make $100 profit). The under/over is 57 points.

In the first quarter betting the Colts are on offer minus half a point at -110 and the Saints can be bet with a half point advantage at -110.  The first quarter total points under/over is 10.5.

The first half betting line is Colts – 3.5 at -105 and the Saints +3.5 -115. The under/over line is 28.5 points.

If you want to get more exotic, you can bet on whether there will be a safety (Yes is +700, No is -1200) and whether there will be overtime (Yes is +700, No is -1200).  Strange as it may seem, statistically it is a good bet that the game does not go to overtime, although risking $1200 to win $100 is a little risky for most bettors’ taste.

You could also bet whether the team that scores first goes on to win the Super Bowl.  Yes is on offer at -185 and No at +145, which is unusual in what is predicted to be a high scoring contest. The total line for this year’s Super Bowl is the highest in the last 15 years.

But where is gets really interesting is when you go for some of the more crazy Super Bowl prop bets.

You can bet, for example, on what color the Gatorade is that is thrown over the winning coach. Yellow is the favorite at -120,  followed by clear at +150, orange at +450, lime green at +550, blue at +1000 and red at +1000.

Or why not be on the number of windmills that Pete Townshend of The Who performs at half time. The under/over is 5.5! You can also bet whether he smashes a guitar on stage, which is +130 that he does and -160 he does not.

You could also bet on the time it takes Carrie Underwood to sing the Star Spangled Banner. The under/over is one minute 42 seconds and the timer starts from when she hits the first note.

Whatever the outcome of the game, you can be sure that there will be plenty of people who don’t really care what happened as long as their prop bets are winners.

It is rumoured one firm is even betting +101 on both sides on the coin toss so that if you bet both sides then you get a guaranteed 0.5 per cent return on your cash in just four hours! However we don’t want to publicise them too much as we’re a bit worried with that grip of math that they might not actually pay players at the end of the day.
