Super Bowl betting update

Posted in NFL Football, Super Bowl XLIV on February 7, 2010 @ 10:26 pm by Richard Hutchinson

MIAMI, FLORIDA – The Indianapolis Colts continue to be the best supported team in Super Bowl XLIV with 63% of the betting public wagering on the Colts on the point spread.

The Colts are 4.5 point favorites with most sportsbooks, although those who have taken heavy action on them are hanging 5 to try and avoid the action. The Saints are taking 37% of the betting action.

On the money line sportsbooks report 70% of the action is on the Saints +170 with 30% on the Colts -195. The amount bet on the money line on a game is usually about one third of that bet on the point spread but in the Super Bowl it is usually about one seventh of the total action on the point spread.

The total on the game has come down from 57 to 56.5 but that still makes it the highest pre-game total in recent Super Bowl history. 65% of the betting public have taken the over with 35% betting the under.

Bookmakers expect the game to attract slightly less action than recent Super Bowls as neither team comes from a major population area such as Texas, California or New York and many people will be watching the Super Bowl purely out of tradition rather than support for the teams. But bookmakers also hope that people will bet on the game to maintain their interest throughout, hence the large number of prop bets that have been thought up on tonight’s matchup.
