French Football: Marseille v Valenciennes betting preview

Posted in French Football, Soccer on February 7, 2010 @ 6:00 pm by Richard Hutchinson

Tonight’s feature game in the French League see Valenciennes make the trip down to take on Marseille in the Velodrome.

Ladbrokes have L’OM as the 2/5 (bet €50 to win €20) jollies to win the match, against a Valenciennes side that has slipped down the table in recent weeks to 11th position. A away win for Valenciennes can be backed at 8/1 with Skybet, but a draw is considered more likely at 100/30 with Betfred.

Marseille completed an unlikely turnaround at Toulouse in midweek, winning their Coupe de La Ligue semi-final 2-1 in extra time. Despite going down to an Andre-Pierre Gignac goal, Marseille were much the better side on the night. Niang looked dangerous up top, but it was Brandao who grabbed a brace to send Marseille to the Stade de France.

Captain Benoît Cheyrou was suspended for the Toulouse clash, while Marseille also had to make do with Steve Mandanda between the sticks. 120 minutes of play isn’t great preparation for a weekend fixture, but morale will be sky high as Marseille look to win their first trophy for 17 years.

Valenciennes are certainly no pushovers however, and are rated as the fourth best team in France away from home. In November the created the mother of all shocks by bagging three points at leaders Bordeaux. Mamadou Samassa scored on that occassion, and is VA’s top goalscorer with six goals in 13 games.

Bet365 are prepared to lay 10/1 about Samassa opening the scoring tonight, but Marseille’s Niang is the hot favourite at 4/1. Brandao is the next alternative for the home side at 5/1 with Betclic.

Last year’s fixture finished 0-0 between these two sides, yet Coral offer 11/1 about another bore draw tonight in the correct score market. The most likely result according to the betting is a 1-0 home win, at odds of 5/1.

Marseille’s title challenge has dramatically weakened, and they are now out to 16/1 with Coral.
