West Ham host Sunderland today in the Premier League as the East London club continues its fight against relegation. The Hammers are currently seventeenth in the table, one place and one point clear of the drop zone, and will hope to take maximum points against a team with little to play for at this stage of the season. Sunderland are safe from relegation and can hope for nothing better than a top-half finish this season.

Back in November, Liverpool Manager Rafa Benitez guaranteed that his side would finish at least fourth in the Premier League this season and play Champions League football next term. He must be regretting this rash promise as May approaches and the Reds are the least well positioned of the four teams in the hunt for one place amongst Europe's elite. Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa all have a game in hand over Liverpool, with Spurs and City four and two points ahead respectively and level on points.

After picking up their first league win in 17 games in emphatic fashion against Bolton on Tuesday, Sunderland now face the unenviable task of taking on Manchester City, on the back of their 4-2 win over Chelsea. Sunderland take on Stoke in tonight's Premiership game, hoping to put an end to the nightmare run of form which has seen them concede 11 goals in their past three matches, and pick up only three points from the last available 27. Stoke are in slightly better form, having knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup last week, but their away form has been atrocious this season, and they have only scored four goals on the road so far this season.

Sunderland 0-2 Aston Villa
Aston Villa face a tricky trip to Sunderland tonight in this batch of midweek Premiership clashes. Villa come off the back of a hugely impressive win at Old Trafford, which saw them climb above Tottenham to sit in the coveted fourth place for the first time this season. They will hope to build on this against a Sunderland side who have beaten Liverpool and Arsenal at home already this season.

Spurs had a fantastic start to the season, but have slumped recently, losing their last two league matches.
