The race for the Golden Boot is heating up and Gonzalo Higuain has been made slight favourite to land the award, at 3/1 (bet £10 to in £30 profit) with most bookmakers. The Argentine striker's hat-trick against South Korea has him sitting atop the scoring charts but he will face strong competition from the likes of Luis Fabiano and David Villa.

No team at the World Cup has a group of strikers quite like Argentina. Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Diego Milito are all world class and they look like they will be sharing a lot of goals at this summer's tournament.

Diego Maradona's Argentina side play their first game of the World Cup today as they face Nigeria in group B at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg. Winning the golden boot in the sport's biggest competition is something only a very select few can accomplish and whoever wins it this year will be in exclusive company indeed, with the likes of Paolo Rossi, Gary Lineker and Brazil's Ronaldo.

The World Cup is now only 23 days away, and already the tension and excitement are rising. Germany were dealt a huge blow yesterday, as their influential captain Michael Ballack was ruled out of the competition. The English squad, who will be looking to emulate their cricketing counterparts, have flown out to Austria to begin their altitude training.

The current European Champions face an uphill struggle tonight, as they bid to overturn the 3-1 deficit they sustained last week to Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan side. Barca were completely out of sorts in the first leg, perhaps due to the volcanic ash which meant they had to travel by coach to Milan. The winner of this match will go on to face Bayern Munich in the final.

Barcelona will want to erase memories of the last week in their game against Xerez tonight. The European and Spanish champions lost 3-1 to Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan in their Champions League match, and they drew last weekend against Espanyol.

Barcelona face Deportivo tonight in La Liga as the title race reaches its climax. The defending champions, who won an unprecedented six trophies last season, won 'El Clasico' at the weekend, beating bitter rivals Real Madrid 2-0 at the Bernabeu. The win puts them three points clear or Real at the top of the table with a superior goal difference and Pep Guardiola will not want his side to lose focus now that there is daylight between the two teams.
