Germany are favourites to beat Uruguay tonight as the teams meet in the third place play-off at the World Cup in South Africa. Both teams have reason to be pleased with their overall campaigns but will be disappointed not to be contesting the final in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Mark Cavendish returned with a bang on Thursday afternoon to take Stage Five of the Tour de France in a sprint finish. Many had speculated as to whether Cavendish would actually complete this year's Tour after a series of disappointing results and crashes, but the Manx Missile answered his critics in emphatic style with a superb burst of speed in Montargis. Stage Five of the Tour de France is an easy 187.5 km ride between Épernay and Montargis that is tailor-made for an exciting sprint finish. There are two innocuous category four climbs at the beginning of the stage, and the finish is fairly safe, with just one potentially hazardous right-handed bend situated 600 metres from the finish. Bookmakers have it as a two horse race between Mark Cavendish and the in-form Alessandro Petacchi.

There is little to choose between Germany and Spain in tonight's World Cup semi-final, but punters have been keen to avail themselves of the 13/8 quotes about Spain winning the match in 90 minutes. Nevertheless, Germany are entitled to have their supporters in the betting, having disposed of both England and Argentina in impressive fashion. The draw is the other result to consider when attempting to predict the correct score, which is often neglected by football bettors.

Spain's David Villa has been installed as the bookmakers' favourite to finish as the top goalscorer at this summer's World Cup after the Barcelona forward carried his side into the semi-finals by scoring five times in the tournament so far. He is available at evens (bet £10 to win £10 profit) with Extrabet and this seems reasonable value on his showings up until this stage.
