NFL Football - Super Bowl betting odds ahead of pre-season
By Richard Hutchinson on 2010-07-20 16:29:41
NEW YORK, NY - With less than a month to go before the start of the NFL pre-season the betting on who will win the 2011 Super Bowl is as open as it has been for many years.
The Indianapolis Colts head the linesmakers` lists but they are on offer at odds of 8/1 (bet $10 to make $80 profit), when the pre-season favorite is usually around the 5/1 mark or lower. Odds of 8/1 suggest that the Colts have a 11 per cent chance of lifting the Vince Lombardi trophy next February.
The San Diego Chargers are second favorites at 10/1, followed by the New Orleans Saints at 11/1. The Saints aim to win back-to-back Super Bowls after beating the Colts 31-17 in the Sun Life Stadium in February.
The Colts will aim to improve upon the terrible record of Super Bowl runners-up, who historically have struggled to even make the playoffs in recent seasons. In the last nine season just two teams have made it through to post-season with the Arizona Cardinals being one of those last season before folding in the playoffs.
Next in the betting are the Dallas Cowboys at 12/1, the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers at 14/1. The Packers and Cowboys have been the best supported teams so far.
The Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets are all 16/1 shots, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers at 22/1 and the Philadelphia Eagles at 25/1.
At the other end of the betting market, the Detroit Lions are the biggest outsiders at 250/1, followed by the St Louis Rams at 200/1 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Clevaland Browns, all of whom can be backed at 150/1.
