NFL Wild Card Play-Offs - Baltimore Ravens vs New England Patriots
By Matt Knowles on 2010-01-10 17:00:05
Baltimore travel to New England today in the Wild Card round of the NFL play-offs hoping to come away with a win and continue to face the San Diego Chargers in the next round. The Ravens record of 9-7 is inferior to the Patriots` 10-6 but both teams are in inconsistent form recently, with three wins from their last six games.
The Patriots go into the game as favourites on the money line at -180 (bet $180 to win $100 profit), leaving the Ravens as underdogs at +170 (bet $100 to win $170 profit). Betting on the money line so far has been fairly even, with 52% of money so far backing the Ravens to cause an upset today.
The points spread for the game has been set at 3.5 points, making the Patriots favourites at -3.5 points and giving the Ravens a handicap of +3.5 points. Betting against the spread so far has been mainly in favour of New England, with 72% of money so far backing them to beat the spot. Last time the teams met New England did indeed win by more than 3.5 points, beating Baltimore 27-21 in October last year.
Both teams have managed to perform better on the field this season than they have against the spread, with Baltimore going 9-7 on the field but only 8-7-1 against the spread. New England have won at 10-6 but could only beat the spot seven times in their sixteen attempts.
The Over/Under for the game has been set at 43.5 points and betting so far has seen 54% of money behind the Over. Both teams have famously stingy defences and together they have recorded nineteen Unders, eleven Overs and two pushes in their combined thirty-two decisions this season.
Neither team is among the top favourites for the Super Bowl this year but both are given reasonable chances of mounting a challenge. The Patriots are seen as the more likely of the two at 14/1 to Baltimore`s 33/1.
