NFL Wild Card Play-Offs - New York Jets vs Cincinnati Bengals
By Matt Knowles on 2010-01-09 20:30:35
New York travel to Cincinnati today in the Wild Card round of the NFL play-offs. The winner goes through to the next round to face either the Indianapolis Colts or the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Divisional Round. Cincinnati were the better team during the regular season, going 10-6 to New York`s 9-7, but that counts for nothing in the post-season and New York will surely think they can get a result today.
The Bengals have been made favourites for the game on the money line at -125 (bet $125 to win $100 profit), leaving the Jets as underdogs at +115 (bet $100 to win $115 profit). Betting on the money line so far has been in favour of the Jets, with 78% of money backing them to produce an upset today.
The point spread for the game has been set at 2.5 points, making Cincinnati favourites at -2.5 points and giving the Jets a handicap of +2.5 points. Betting against the spread has leaned towards the home team and 62% of money so far has backed the Bengals to beat the spot. However, last time the teams met, in week seventeen of the current season, New York crushed Cincinnati 37-0, although the Bengals had nothing to gain from a win.
New York covered the spread at the same rate as they won during the season and went 9-7 against the spot. The Bengals, on the other hand, despite going 10-6 on the field, only managed to cover the spread in seven of their sixteen attempts.
The Over/Under for the game has been set at 34 points and betting so far has seen 86% of money backing the Over. This seems strange, however, as both teams have leaned towards the Under during the regular season, together recording fourteen Overs in their combined thirty-two decisions. The Bengals have also gone Under in their last nine games as a home favourite.
Neither team is among the favourites for the Super Bowl this year and they are seen as the two weakest teams still in contention. Cincinnati, at 40/1, are given a bette chance than they Jets, who are available at 50/1.
