NFL Monday Night football - New York Giants vs Washington Redskins
By Matt Knowles on 2009-12-22 00:05:49
New York travel to Washington tonight hoping to avoid being the latest team to go 7-7 this week. Six teams moved from either 7-6 or 6-7 to a .500 win percentage yesterday and New York need to take their opportunity to take a step away from the chasing pack. Washington, who have been out of the play-off picture for a while at 4-9, can hope only to spoil the party for their NFC East rivals with a win.
The visitors are favourites for the game on the money line at -137 (bet $137 to win $100 profit), leaving the Redskins as underdogs at home at +125 (bet $100 to win $125 profit). Betting on the money line so far has seen the majority of money backing the favourites with 77% in favour of New York avoiding an upset.
The points spread for the game is set at three points, making New York favourites at -3 points and giving the Redskins a handicap of +3 points. Betting against the spread so far has been very similar to the money line with 76% of money backing the Giants to cover. Last time the teams met New York indeed won by more than three in a 23-17 win over Washington in week one of the current season.
Washington may have had a season to forget on the field but they have been better against the spread, covering at 7-6 despite winning at only 4-9. New York, by contrast, have won at 7-6 and covered at the poor rate of 4-9, showing that performing on the field does not always lead to success against the spot.
The Over.Under line for the game has been set at 43.5 and betting so far has seen 63% of money backing the Over. This seems reasonable, as the teams combined have recorded sixteen Overs and ten Unders in their twenty-six decisions so far this season.
Neither of the teams are among the favourites to win this year`s Super Bowl and New York`s recent run of one win in their last eight games has seen them struggling to make the play-offs, pushing their odds out as far as 125/1. Washington are no longer in the hunt for glory this year.
