NFL Week Fifteen - Green Bay Packers vs Pittsburgh Steelers
By Matt Knowles on 2009-12-20 20:15:05
Pittsburgh have all but ended their own play-off chances and tonight host Green Bay hoping to deal a blow to their visitors` own hopes of earning a wild-card spot. The Steelers have now lost five games in a row and the defending Super Bowl Champions look nothing like the side they were in February, last week losing 13-6 in Cleveland to fall to 6-7. Green Bay, however, have exceeded expectations and their 21-14 win over Chicago saw them improve to 8-5, and they now hold the second wild-card spot in the NFC....
Pittsburgh, despite their incredibly poor recent form, go into the game as favourites on the money line at -120 (bet $130 to win $100 profit), leaving Green Bay as underdogs at +111 (bet $100 to win $110 profit). Betting on the money line so far has seen almost everyone backing Green Bay, and 97% of money has been unable to see past the recent losing streak of tonight`s hosts.
The points spread for the game has been set at two points, making the Steelers favourites at -2 points and giving the Packers a handicap of +2 points. Betting against the spread has also focused on Green Bay, albeit to a lesser extent, with 66% of action backing the visitors. Last time the sides met they were separated by more than two points, and Pittsburgh cruised to a 20-10 win in the 2005 season.
Green Bay have managed to slightly improve on their on-field record of 8-5 by covering the spread at 8-4-1. Pittsburgh, however, have somehow managed to perform even worse against the spread than than they have on the field, winning at 6-7 but beating spot just four times in thirteen attempts so far this season.
The Over/Under total for the game has been set at 41 points and betting so far has seen 65% of money backing the Over. However, the teams together have split perfectly between the two, with thirteen Overs and thirteen Unders in their combined twenty-six decisions.
Neither team is among the favourites for the Super Bowl this year but Green Bay, at 25/1, are at least given a reasonable chance. Pittsburgh are almost eliminated from the post-season and as a result are as long as 150/1 for glory this year.
