NFL Week Nine betting - Carolina Panthers vs New Orleans Saints
By Matt Knowles on 2009-11-08 20:00:17
The unbeaten New Orleans Saints host Carolina in week nine of the NFL season looking to extend that record against their NFC South rivals. New Orleans have been perfect so far and stand at 7-0, last week winning 35-27 over the Atlanta Falcons, another division rival. Carolina have been inconsistent this year but last week came away with an impressive 34-21 win in Arizona to improve to 3-4.
The Saints are, as expected, heavy favourites for the game on the money line, priced at -769 (bet $769 to win $100 profit). Carolina are left as large underdogs at +600 (bet $100 to win $600 profit). So far, betting on the money line has favoured the Panthers, with 85% of money in favour of an upset.
The point spread has been set at 13, making the Saints favourites at -13 points and giving Carolina a massive handicap of +13 points. Betting so far has seen 78% of action backing the hosts to cover the spread. Last time the teams met, however, the Panthers won 33-31 in week seventeen of last season, and it may surprise some to hear the Carolina has won six of the last seven meetings between the two sides.
Both teams have performed marginally better on the field than they have against the spread this season, with New Orleans going 6-1 to their on-field 7-0 and Carolina going 2-5 while winning at 3-4. Last season the Saints at home covered at a rate of 7-1.
The Over/Under for the game is set at 52 points with 97% of betting so far favouring the Over. This makes sense, as the two teams combined have finished Over nine times in fourteen decisions.
The Saints have been made favourites to win the Super Bowl this year after a string of impressive performances that includes winning at Philadelphia and blowing out the New York Giants in week six. They are priced at 10/3, while the Panthers are not seen as contenders at 200/1.
