NFL Week Nine betting - Washington Redskins vs Atlanta Falcons
By Matt Knowles on 2009-11-08 17:00:57
Washington travel to Atlanta in week nine of the NFL season hoping to perform better after their bye week than they did before it. After going 2-2 in the first four weeks the Redskins lost three games in a row to fall to 2-5, losing 27-17 to Philadelphia in their last game. Atlanta have played well so far but also lost their most recent contest, being beaten 35-27 in New Orleans to fall to 4-3.
The Falcons are strong favourites for the game on the money line at -500 (bet $500 to win $100 profit), leaving the Redskins as big underdogs at +430 (bet $100 to win $430 profit). Betting on the money line has so far favoured the hosts, with 72% of money backing the Falcons to bounce back from defeats in their last two games.
The point spread for the game has been set at 10 points, making the Falcons favourites at -10 and giving the Redskins a large handicap of +10 points. Betting against the spread has been almost unanimously behind Atlanta, with 96% expecting them to win by more than the ten necessary points. Last time the teams met was in week thirteen of the 2006 season and interestingly the Falcons won 24-14, by exactly ten points.
Atlanta this season have so far been slightly better against the spread than they have on the field, covering at a rate of 5-2 while winning at 4-3. Washington have covered at the same rate as they have won, covering in defeats to New York and Carolina but failing to cover in both of their wins this season.
The Over/Under for the game is set at 41.5 points, and so far 79% of betting has backed the Under. The teams together have had six Overs and eight Unders in their fourteen decisions so far.
The bookmakers do not see either of the teams as genuine contenders for the Super Bowl this year, but the Falcons are the more likely of the two, at 50/1 while the Redskins are at 750/1.
