NFL Monday Night Football - Atlanta Falcons vs New Orleans Saints
By Matt Knowles on 2009-11-03 00:45:26
Atlanta make the short trip to New Orleans to face the Saints tonight for an NFC South clash in week eight of the NFL season. Both sides have started well. Atlanta are second in the division at 4-2 but will look to get back on track after losing 37-21 in Dallas last week. The Saints have been perfect so far at 6-0, last week storming back from 21 points down to beat Miami 46-34.
New Orleans are heavy favourites for the game at -600 (bet $600 to win $100 profit), making Atlanta big underdogs at +475 (bet $100 to win $475 profit). In betting so far on the money line, 71% of money has backed the visitors to pull off an upset and end the hosts` unbeaten run.
The point spread for tonight is set at 12, making the Saints favourites at -12 points and Atlanta underdogs at +12, just under two touchdowns worth of points. Betting against the spread has so far favoured the Saints, with 72% of action behind them. Last time the teams met the Saints did indeed win, but by only four points in a 29-25 victory in week 14 of last season.
Both teams have so far performed as well against the spread as they have on the field this season, with the Saints covering at 6-0 and Atlanta at 4-2. In the last six meetings between the two sides, the Saints have won five and covered at 4-2. It is also worth noting that the Saints have covered at home in ten of their last eleven attempts.
The Over/Under is set at 55.5 points, with 79% of money so far backing the Over. The records of the two teams do not point decisively in any direction here, but in the twelve decisions in which these two have been involved, there have been seven Overs and five Unders.
The Saints are now clear favourites for the Super Bowl, priced at 4/1 after their consistently impressive performances this season. Atlanta are not among the favourites, but are given some hope at 33/1.
