NFL Week Five Betting - Washington Redskins vs Carolina Panthers
By Matt Knowles on 2009-10-11 16:00:04
Winless Carolina host Washington in week five of the NFL season. Carolina are 0-3 this year and last week had a bye. While the Panthers were taking the weekend off, the Redskins were improving to 2-2 with a 16-13 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Carolina are favourites for the game on the money line even though they are yet to win and are priced at -188 (bet $188 to win $100 profit). Washington, despite having a better record, are underdogs at +175 (bet $100 to win $175 profit). Last time the sides met the Redskins came out on top 17-13 in week 12 of the 2006 season. So far 78% of money on the money line has been on a home win.
The linemakers set the point spread at 3.5 points, making the Panthers favourites at -3.5 and leaving the Redskins as underdogs at 3.5 points. Betting so far has focused heavily on the Panthers, with 90% of money so far going on the hosts.
So far this season the Panthers have failed to cover in all of their losses. Last time Washington played in Carolina, they lost but managed to cover the spread. This year, however, despite being 2-2 they are 1-3 against the spread.
The Over/Under is set at 37.5, and so far 63% of betting has been on the under. Washington have been under in three of their last four but are 1-1 on the road. Carolina`s only home game this year finished over.
Carolina are slightly more likely to win the Superbowl this year, but neither team is rated very highly by the bookmakers, with the Panthers at 219/1 and the Redskins at 299/1.
