Are betting shops a blight on our city centres?

Self-styled saviour of the high street Mary Portas has come under fire today from UK bookmakers after calling for stronger controls on the number of betting shops allowed in city centres.
According to the shopping guru – who yesterday submitted a 28-point plan to Prime Minister David Cameron to “save the high street” – betting shops should have their own planning label so their expansion can be tracked more closely. Reading between the lines, then, Portas thinks betting shops lower the tone of city centres.
The question is…is she right?
