Pre-Season Friendly: MLS All-Stars v Manchester United Odds and Betting Preview
By Tristan Wootton on 2010-07-28 07:15:24
HOUSTON, TX - Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to the Kansas City Wizards on Sunday afternoon, but coach Sir Alex Ferguson will be expecting better things from his makeshift side against the MLS All-Stars at Reliant Stadium in Texas this afternoon.
The Red Devils are the 4/6 (bet £6 to win £4 profit) favourites with Sky Bet to beat the MLS All-Stars in their final pre-season in North America, before travelling to Mexico and then Ireland. Last year`s All-Stars game finished drawn against Everton, and another draw is a 3/1 chance with Bet 365. The MLS All-Stars are the outsiders at 9/2 with Boylesports and William Hill to win the match in 90 minutes, but they have won four of their last five matches against British opposition.
The previous five opponents were Fulham, Chelsea, Celtic, West Ham and Everton, so some soccer punters will argue that Manchester United represents their toughest assignment to date. Plenty will be keen to side with a United win at 4/6 as many of the All-Stars have a congested fixture list, including the CONCACAF Champions League taking place the day before the Houston match and then league action the following weekend just a few days later.
However the All-Stars will be keen to put in a good showing in front of a global audience, and can boast the likes of Dwayne De Rosario and Landon Donovan in the squad. Meanwhile United will have both Dimitar Berbatov and Nani in attack, but will be without World Cup players such as Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.
Bet 365 are expecting it to be an entertaining match, as they quote over 2.5 goals at 7/10. `Overs` will be a popular bet after the Wizards tore through the weakened United defence on Sunday like a hot knife through butter, but `unders` is given a chance at 11/10.
The Half-time/Full-time market can give punters an opportunity to bet the United win at enhanced odds, and Sir Alex Ferguson`s men are 6/4 with Coral to be leading at both half-time and full-time in Texas. Draw/United is 10/3 with the same bookmaker, and Draw/Draw would herald a penalty shootout at 11/2 with Bet 365. MLS All-Stars/MLS All-Stars is a very tempting wager at 9/1.
In the correct score betting, the most likely scoreline is 2-0 to United at 11/2. A slender 1-0 win to the favourites is at 13/2 with Bet 365, and another 1-1 stalemate is generally available at 7/1. 0-0 would be disappointing at 14/1, but at least spectators would be entertained by a penalty shootout. 2-1 to the MLS All-Stars is at 16/1 for punters backing goals in the match.
The match begins on Wednesday evening at 7.30pm local time (CDT), which is 1.30am English time (BST) on Thursday morning.
