Pre-Season Friendly: Grasshopper Club Zürich v Liverpool Odds and Betting Preview
By Tristan Wootton on 2010-07-21 16:30:30
ZUG, SWITZERLAND - Liverpool take on Grasshopper Club Zürich this evening in Roy Hodgson`s first game in charge, after last week`s pre-season friendly against Al-Hilal was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Bookmakers are taking bets on the match and make The Reds hot favourites to win, despite fielding a below-strength side in Zug.
Liverpool are best-priced at 4/6 (bet £6 to win £4 profit) with Blue Square and Totesport to get Hodgson off to a flier against his old club. The draw would by no means be a disaster for either side, and is available at 10/3 on Betfair. The Grasshoppers are 7/2 with Ladbrokes to create an upset.
The Scousers will be on a high after the recent signing of Chelsea winger Joe Cole, added to the news that emblematic captain Steven Gerrard looks set to stay for at least another season on Merseyside. The optimism in the Liverpool camp now means that World Cup-winning striker Fernando Torres is quoted by Ladbrokes at just 1/4 to stay at the club.
The Reds will be missing their World Cup stars, which is why punters have not been tempted to dive into them at skinny odds of 4/6. Moreover, they are facing the most successful Swiss club of all time, who will be in a better physical condition going into their new domestic season this coming weekend.
The bookies are expecting goals in this match, as they make over 2.5 goals the 8/11 favourite outcome. `Unders` is at 6/5 with Paddy Power.
In the correct score betting, a 1-1 draw between the two sides is fancied by 888sport at 13/2. The next most likely scorelines are 1-0 and 2-0 wins to Liverpool, which are at 7/1 and 15/2 respectively with Bet 365. William Hill are laying 16/1 about a 3-0 romp, and a 1-0 win for the Swiss side looks a tempting bet at 20/1 on Betfair.
Liverpool are 6/4 with Victor Chandler to be winning at both half-time and full-time in Zug, and Draw/Liverpool is next in the betting at 4/1. It is 25/1 with Bet Internet for the Premier League side to come back from a losing position at half-time and win the friendly match before the final whistle.
Soccer bettors should keep an eye out for Liverpool youngsters Nathan Eccleston and Jonjo Shelvey in attack, whilst it will also be interesting to see how 15-year-old Endogan Adili gets on for the Swiss team. Adili hold the record for being the youngest player to score in a top-level European league match since World War 2.
Bet 365 customers can catch the match this evening via their live streaming service at 6.30pm BST.
