Premier League Top Goalscorer Betting Update: Van Persie Favourite for Golden Boot

Robin van Persie’s remarkable return of 14 goals from 14 Premier League games makes him the bookmakers’ favourite to finish as the league’s top scorer, with Sky Bet offering best odds of 13/8. The Dutchman has enjoyed two staggeringly prolific for Arsenal when he has been available and shows no signs of slowing down, with yet another fine performance lifting his team to a 4-0 victory over Wigan last time out. If he can keep fit, which has always been the real problem for both van Persie and Arsenal, he will be very tough to beat and looks a worthy market leader.
Next in the betting is Sergio Aguero, who has taken to the Premier League like a fish to water and has eleven league goals so far this season. Aguero looks to have established himself as first choice in a City side packed with attacking players, and at 3/1 with Stan James the Argentinian is by far the biggest threat to van Persie. Whether or not he can continue to play at the same level remains to be seen, but he will definitely to get the chances he needs to challenge for the Golden Boot.
Edin Dzeko’s first season in English football saw him labelled as an expensive flop after his £27m transfer from Wolfsburg but this term he has showed why he came with such a hefty price tag, scoring ten league goals and creating chances for those around him. Dzeko is available at 8/1 with Sky Bet and could look a more attractive bet than Aguero, who is only one goal ahead of him and a much shorter price.
Victor Chandler are top price on Wayne Rooney, who is the best hope England have of winning the Golden Boot, at 10/1. Rooney started the campaign in fine scoring form and is on nine so far, but the striker has been playing in a deeper role of late and has scored just once in his last nine appearances. Those who have backed him for the Golden Boot will need this form to pick up sooner rather than later if they do not wish to see him fall too far off the pace.
Emmanuel Adebayor has failed to reach the heights he did with Arsenal in 2007/08, when he hit 24 goals in just 36 appearances in the Premier League, during spells at Manchester City and Real Madrid, but the Togolese forward has shown signs of a return to his very best at Tottenham and could be a surprise contender for the Golden Boot, at 20/1 with William Hill and other bookmakers. However, he does have as many as seven goals to make up on his old foe Robin van Persie.
Another with a good deal to do is Javier Hernandez, who started the season favourite to top-score after his prolific debut term in England. An injury that kept him out of the first few weeks of this campaign seems to have scuppered his chances, though, and he is now available at 25/1 with Bet 365.
Mario Balotelli is anything but predictable but the Manchester City troublemaker looks too far behind to win the Golden Boot, although he has made a strong start and scored seven goals, available at 28/1 with Blue Square and 888 Sport. Next in the betting are Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, both at 33/1 with William Hill and Victor Chandler, although Suarez has made a slow start as far as goals are concerned and Sturridge looks set to be used mainly as a winger this season.
Demba Ba is largely responsible for Newcastle’s lofty position in the League table, on as many as nine goals, but seems unlikely to keep it up playing for a mid-table side. He is available at 33/1 with Paddy Power, but Darren Bent may be a more attractive option after years of top-flight goals, and the Villa man can be backed at 501 with Victor Chandler.
One interesting long-shot in the market is Rafael van der Vaart, who can be backed at 100/1 with Bet 365 and is still in touch with the leaders on six goals. The Dutchman is sure to get games in a free-scoring Spurs side and if they continue their form he is sure to continue his, which is likely to see him shorten in the betting.
