Premier League: QPR vs Sunderland Odds and Betting Preview
By Tom Goulding on 2011-12-21 10:46:13
LONDON, UK - Martin O'Neill takes his Sunderland side to the capital tonight in his third game in charge of the north-east club, to face Neil Warnock's QPR. There's not much which separates the two sides in the betting, with QPR marginal favourites to win the game, best at 15/8 (bet £8 to make £15) on Beftair while Sunderland are a top price of 2/1 with Paddy Power. Punters can back the draw at 12/5, only with Sky Bet.
It's 15th vs 17th at Loftus Road and a game which home side QPR really should be winning if they want to cement a place as a mid-table side. They have however fared better on the road, seeing only one win at home this season, against 9-man Chelsea. Their three wins on their travels have been due to an ability to sit back, absorb pressure and hit teams on the break with the pace and quality of Shaun Wright-Phillips and DJ Campbell. However, the fans at Loftus Road will want to see them come out and take the game to Sunderland, which may not suit them.
Sunderland have struggled so much this season that they sacked manager Steve Bruce two weeks ago and brought in a Premier League  household name in Martin O'Neill. He got off to the perfect start with a home win over Blackburn, but while that was very unconvincing (two late goals needed to prevent defeat), their 1-0 defeat away to high-flying Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was arguably a more impressive perfomance, as they were unlucky to have lost the game at all, their defence having performed well throughout.
75% of QPR home games have gone under 2.5 goals and this is best at 4/5 tonight with Ladbrokes and Blue Square. However, 56% of all of Sunderland's games have gone over 2.5 goals, and so if you see goals in tonight's game, you can back over 2.5 at a top price of 11/10 with Boylesports.
Conor Wickham and Stephane Sessegnon have started both the last two games up front together for the Mackems but Sessegnon has certainly looked the more dangerous and lively throughout as he has dropped off Wickham into the space. Wickham is 13/5 with Bet365 to score anytime tonight while Sessegnon is a top price of 11/4 with Sky Bet. Nicklas Bendtner undoubtedly has the quality to cause defences problems if not always the application, and the Dane is 12/5 with Stan James to get on the scoresheet. Sebastian Larsson, who has scored 3 goals with free-kicks from 7 attempts this season, is 5/1 with Paddy Power and may be worth a punt.
Heider Helguson is QPR's top goalscorer with 7 league goals and he is 2/1 with Coral and Stan James to score anytime, while England international Jay Bothroyd is next best at 12/5 with Bet365. You can back Shaun Wright-Phillips at 7/2 with Sky Bet to put the ball in the back of the net.
The match kicks off at 2000 GMT.
