Paddy Power Predicts Shocks In Carling Cup Week
By Sarah Preece on 2010-08-23 20:09:20
Free-scoring Chelsea re the 9/2 favourites to win this year’s Carling Cup with Paddy Power as the bulk of the Premier League prepares to enter the tournament tomorrow.
Although the Champions League teams won’t join the battle until the next round it remains a tournament dominated by the big clubs with defending champions Manchester United at 5/1.
Man City are 6/1 to make the Carling Cup the first meaningful trophy in their new cash-rich era with Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs all at 10/1. Everton and Aston Villa, whose best hopes for winning a trophy surely lie in the Carling Cup, are 12/1 and 16/1 respectively.
The Cup has thrown up many shocks in recent years with Premier League teams coming unstuck when fielding weaker teams against lower league clubs. Paddy Power are betting on how many Premier League clubs will be knocked out of the tournament this week, making two or three clubs the most likely number at 10/11. Its 5/1 that no more than one Premier League team exits at this stage and 10/1 for six or more clubs to bite the dust.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “It’s early enough in the season for the big boys to not have yet worked up a full head of steam, allowing for some smaller clubs to come up on the rails and pull off some shocks.â€
