Manchester United are favourites to get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start tonight by beating newly-promoted Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Last season`s runners-up are as short as 2/9 (bet £90 to win £20 profit) with most firms, while Newcastle are 18/1 on Betfair, where the draw is priced at 6/1.
The game is 4/6 to finish over 2.5 goals, and this has been the case in four of the last five matches between the two teams. A total lower than 2.5 is 29/20 on Betfair, while over 3.5 goals is 7/4 with William Hill.
Most bookmakers offer 11/2 that United win 2-0 tonight, with 3-0 at 7/1 and 1-0 at 15/2 on Betfair. Betfair also has the best odds on a 1-1 draw, at 14/1, and a 1-0 with for the visitors, as long as 47/1.
The exchange is the place to go to find the top price on every player in the first goalscorer market tonight, with Wayne Rooney favourite at 10/3, ahead of Dimitar Berbatov at 5/1. New signing Javier Hernandez, who has impressed so far in pre-season, is 6/1, while Michael Owen is 7/1 to score against the club with which he made his name.
United are 3/4 on Betfair to lead tonight at both half-time and full-time and 7/2 with most bookmakers to win the match after drawing at the break. Draw/draw is 10/1 with Stan James and Newcastle are 40/1 with Victor Chandler to stun their opponents by leading at both the interval and the final whistle.
The two teams go into the season with very different ambitions. United will be looking to regain the Premier League title and are 23/10 second-favourites with Paddy Power to do so. Newcastle, however, are just hoping to stay in the top flight, with Ladbrokes and Stan James offering just 7/2 that they are relegated come the end of the season.
