Tottenham continue their challenge for a spot in the Champions League today as they make the long trip north to face Sunderland in the Premier League. Spurs are currently occupy the coveted fourth place in the table that would grant them entry to football`s most prestigious club competition but face pressure from Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool, with City only two points behind the North Londoners.
Spurs go into today`s game as favourites at 6/5 (bet £50 to win £60 profit), leaving Sunderland as home underdogs at 14/5 with Coral, with the draw at 12/5. The visitors are the form team and are on a ten match unbeaten run, having won seven of their last eight games. Sunderland seem to have recovered from their recent winless streak but Steve Bruce will be concerned at the lack of fight his side showed in their 3-0 defeat at Anfield last time out.
The bookmakers have made a 1-1 draw the favourite score for the game at 13/2, followed by a 1-0 win for Spurs at 7/1. A more comfortable 2-0 success for the visitors is available at 10/1 and a 0-0 draw is at 9/1. A surprise 1-0 win for Sunderland is 10/1 with Canbet and the Black Cats are 19/1 with Paddy Power to come away with a 2-0 win and all three points.
Jermaine Defoe has been made favourite to open the scoring today on his return from injury at 5/1, with in-form Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko at 11/2 and England hopeful Peter Crouch at 13/2 with Skybet. Darren Bent, who has scored twenty league goals this season, is seen as Sunderland`s best hope of scoring the game`s first goal at 6/1.
Stan James offer 14/5 that Tottenham lead today at both half-time and full-time and Spurs are generally available at 4/1 t win the match after drawing at half-time. The bookmakers are slightly longer, at 9/2 that both halves end in a draw and Sunderland are 6/1 with Coral to be winning at both the interval and the final whistle. Draw/Sunderland is available at 8/1 wit Ladbrokes.
Tottenham`s ambition for this season is to finish in the top four and the bookmakers seem to think they have the best claim of all the teams involved, making them favourites at 6/4.
