English Premiership betting - Wigan vs Liverpool
By Harry Maude on 2010-03-08 19:00:25
Liverpool travel to Wigan tonight, hoping for a win which will see them occupy a top four spot for the first time since the fifth week of this season. However, even if they do win, they will only be two points ahead of Tottenham and Man City, and will have played one more game than Spurs and two more than Man City.
Wigan are on a poor run of form at the moment, and have not won in their last seven domestic games. Last match they were handed a 3-0 thrashing by Spurs, and they have dropped down into sixteenth place, only one point away from the relegation zone. Liverpool will be boosted by the return of star striker Fernando Torres, who scored against Blackburn in his first game since returning from injury.
Liverpool are comfortable favourites for the match, priced at 8/13 (bet £130 to make £80 profit), while Wigan are at 6/1 with Coral. Betfair offer 3/1 on the draw.
On the correct score market, a 1-0 win for Liverpool is the favourite result, priced at 6/1, followed by a 2-0 win which is at 13/2 with Betfred. A 1-1 draw is at 7/1 with Skybet, and a 2-1 win for Rafa Benitez`s side is at 8/1. Bet365 offer 10/1 on the match finishing as a stalemate, and Wigan`s best hope is a 1-0 win, which is priced at 15/1.
For those looking for better value on a Liverpool win, they can be backed at 8/5 with Stan James to be winning at half time and full time, while draw / Liverpool is at 7/2 with Ladbrokes. Draw / draw is generally available at 5/1, and Wigan / Wigan is at 14/1 with Victor Chandler. Draw / Wigan is priced at 16/1.
Spaniard Fernando Torres is a big favourite to open the scoring, priced at 10/3. `El Nino` has scored 13 goals in his 17 games so far this season. Steven Gerrard, who scored Liverpool`s other goal against Blackburn, is a 6/1 shot to score first tonight. Dirk Kuyt is priced at 8/1 on Betfair, while Hugo Rodallega is 9/1 for Wigan. Jason Scotland is Wigan`s next best hope, and Bet365 offer 12/1 on him netting the opener.
Liverpool have pulled themselves together in recent weeks, and are now only just behind Man City in the Top Four betting. They are priced at 15/8, while City are at 7/4. The other contenders, Spurs and Aston Villa, are both at 9/2. Meanwhile in the relegation betting , Wigan are priced at 4/1 to go down.
