Wimbledon 2010: Laura Robson v Jelena Jankovic Betting Preview
By Tristan Wootton on 2010-06-21 11:35:34
WIMBLEDON, UK - Laura Robson has been handed a very difficult task this afternoon in the shape of fourth seed Jelena Jankovic. The 16-year-old British hope is in Centre Court action this afternoon after Roger Federer faces Alejandro Falla, but bookmakers think that Robson has it all to do on paper.
Robson is ranked 236 on the WTA Tour, which suggests that the 6/1 offered by Stan James and Betfred about her beating Jankovic today is shorter than it should be. Her legion of fans will remember that she won the Junior Girls` Title at SW19 two years ago, which may be why Robson`s odds have been shortened to 5/1 with Totesport and Betfred. Jankovic is expected to have things her way, and the best price about her winning the match is 2/15 (bet £150 to win just £20 profit) with Boylesports.
Expectations are very high for Robson, perhaps a little too much so. At least it is in her favour that she swerved the Roland Garros Juniors` Tournament to try to fine-tune her grass court game. She managed to take a set off Hantuchova last year, so a 2-1 victory in sets to Jankovic today may appeal to some at 9/2 with William Hill. However, a 2-0 win to the favourite is deemed more likely at 1/3 with Bet 365. Finally it is 14/1 with the same firm that Robson gets the better of her opponents in three sets.
Jelena Jankovic does not have a stellar record at Wimbledon, although she won the mixed doubles with Jamie Murray back in 2007. Punters who think that Jelly is vulnerable today could try backing Robson to win the first set at 4/1 with Betfred.
Supporters of Robson also have the choice to back her on the handicap with a head start. It is evens (1/1) with Betfred that Robson wins with a +5.5 game head start, and 5/1 with Paddy Power that she wins with a +1.5 game start. Alternatively, favourite-backers can get a slightly bigger price on Jankovic if they back her to win the match comfortably (-7.5 games), at 9/4 with Paddy Power.
Another bet on Laura Robson is that she loses the first set, but that she then comes from behind to win the match at 25/1 with William Hill.
