French Open: Roger Federer v Robin Soderling Betting Preview
By Tristan Wootton on 2010-06-01 11:15:47
PARIS, FRANCE - Day ten of Roland Garros gets under way at 2pm local time with Caroline Wozniacki taking on Francesca Schiavone as the tournament enters the quarter final stage. Yesterday we saw Rafael Nadal continue his blistering form on his favoured clay surface, and also a surprise as the hot favourite for the Women`s Singles title, Justine Henin, got dumped out of the competition.
The pick of today`s betting heats is without doubt the re-run of the 2009 Men`s Final between Roger Federer and Robin Soderling. The mouth-watering clash could be disturbed by the forecast heavy rain which is set to hit Paris later, but that will not prevent the majority of tennis punters from backing the Swiss star at short odds of 2/9 (bet $90 to win $20 profit) to win the tasty encounter.
Federer has yet to drop a set in this year`s competition, and he most recently crushed his friend Stanislas Wawrinka in the last round. He is very much on course for a fifth successive French Open final, and he has beaten Soderling on the last 12 occasions in which they have met.
Bettors willing to bet that Soderling makes it 13th time lucky can back the Swede at 7/2 with Boylesports and Bet 365. Soderling has certainly faced tougher opposition than Federer during the French Open, and he is no forlorn hope to at least be competitive today. Soderling actually beat Federer 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 as recently as January 1 in Abu Dhabi, but that was an exhibition match, so does not count for the head to head statistic.
In the set betting, another Federer 3-0 walkover can be backed at 5/4 with William Hill. Many will remember how Federer only needed three sets in last year`s final to win his first ever French Open title. Soderling could well grab a set on this occasion, and a 3-1 Federer win is rated as a 5/2 chance with the bookies.
In the outright betting, Soderling is 25/1 with Stan James to go one better than last year. Roger Federer could tempt a few as an alternative to Nadal - he is currently available at 7/2 with Paddy Power.
