US Open Champion Juan Martin Del Potro and American Andy Roddick both suffered shock defeats earlier today in the China Open. Venus Williams and Dinara Safina both also lost, with Serena Williams taking advantage of the Russian’s poor form to snatch back the world number 1 spot.
Argentinian Del Potro lost 6-4, 6-4 to France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin, saying he was suffering from jet-lag and a stomach ache. World no. 6 Roddick lost 6-2, 6-4, to 27 qualifier Lukasz Kubot. Rafael Nadal is favourite for the tournament at 11/8 (bet $80 to make $110 profit), with Serbian Novak Djokovic at 7/2. Russian Nikolay Davydenko and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco are both priced at 10/1.
In the Women’s draw Serena reclaimed her world no. 1 ranking with her second round victory over Ekaterina Makarova, beating the Russian 6-3, 6-2. Serena is rated as 9/4 favourite to win the tournament. Elena Dementieva is second favourite at 4/1, followed by Maria Sharapova at 6/1. Svetlana Kuznetsova is next at 9/1.
Roger Federer is not playing in this tournament and will also miss the Japan Open due to fatigue.
