Spanish club Barcelona are favourites at 7/5 to become the first club during the Champions League era to retain their title of champions of Europe. Pep Guardiola`s side won an incredible six trophies last season and, while they cannot repeat that feat after crashing out of the Spanish Cup, they are currently second only one goal difference in La Liga ad will be confident of reaching at least the semi-finals this year after drawing 2-2 at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg of their tie against Arsenal.
Following Barca is Jose Mourinho`s Internazionale at 4/1. Inter have not reached the semis since 2003, their only appearance in over twenty-five years, but look set to do so this year after taking a 1-0 lead in their tie against Russian side CSKA Moscow. Mourinho first made his name as a manager in the Champions League when his Porto were crowned champions in 2003. However, he was disappointing in the competition during his spell at Chelsea and will hope to do better at his latest club.
Last year`s beaten finalists Manchester United are next at 5/1. The Red Devils face Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in the second leg of their tie and will hope to overturn a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in Germany that saw Bayern score twice in the closing stages after Wayne Rooney struck in the second minute. Top-scorer Rooney is unavailable for the second leg, however, and United have seemed toothless at times without him.
French teams have not been particularly successful in Europe recently, as they struggle to compete financially with teams from England and Spain, but this year Lyon and Bordeaux face each other in the quarter finals. Lyon won the first leg 3-1 and, while the tie is not yet over, they are given a far better chance of European glory than their domestic rivals at 11/1, with Bordeaux at 40/1.
Arsenal, who face Barcelona tonight, are 18/1 to overcome the champions and go on to win the competition. The Gunners are without several key players and will be for the rest of the season but if they can pull off a result at the Nou Camp there is no reason they can`t go all the way this season.
