UEFA Champions League betting - Marseille vs Real Madrid
By Harry Maude on 2009-12-08 18:30:51
Real Madrid tonight travel to Marseille to play their final Champions League group game. Madrid struggled to a 4-2 win against Almeria on Saturday, scoring three late goals, but are in the driving seat in their group. They are currently on 10 points, with AC Milan on eight and Marseille on seven.
This means that if Marseille beat Real by three goals and Milan also win, then Los Merengues will go out of the competition at the first hurdle. Cristiano Ronaldo, who has recently returned from injury, had a mixed game against Almeria. He missed a penalty in the 83rd minute, scored in the 85th, was booked in the 86th and sent off in the 89th.
Real are favourites for the clash, priced at 7/5 (bet £50 to make £70 profit), and Marseille are at 21/10. The draw is priced at 5/2. When these sides met earlier in the competition, Real came out on top in a 3-0 win, with Ronaldo scoring two and Kaka one.
Bookies have made a 1-1 draw the favourite result at 6/1, followed by a 1-0 Real win at 7/1. A 2-1 Real win is at 17/2, while a 1-0 Marseille win is at 9/1. A goalless draw is priced at 11/1, ahead of a 2-1 Marseille win at 12/1 and a 2-0 Real win at 14/1.
Madrid are 10/3 to be winning at half time and full time and Marseille are 9/2 to do the same. Draw / draw and draw / Real are both priced at 5/1, and draw / Marseille is at 6/1. Marseille / draw and Madrid / draw are both at 16/1.
Ronaldo, who has already scored four goals in this competition, is favourite to open the scoring at 5/1. The Portuguese forward is also favourite to finish the competition as top scorer, priced at 5/2. Marseille striker Mamadou Niang is next most likely to open the scoring at 7/1. Real Madrid strikers Gonzalo Higuain, Karim Benzema and Ruud van Nistelrooy are all also at 7/1. Next are Brandao and Raul who are both at 8/1. Marseille`s Fernando Morientes is 9/1 to score against his former team.
Despite Real`s recent dip in form, they are third favourites to win the competition at 7/1, behind arch-rivals Barcelona and Chelsea. Real will be desperate to do well in Europe this season, as they have not progressed beyond the first knockout round in the Champions League since 2004.
