UEFA Champions League Preview - AC Milan vs Real Madrid
By Matt Knowles on 2009-11-03 19:00:10
The most expensive team in the world travel to the San Siro tonight to face AC Milan in the UEFA Champions league group stages. Real Madrid`s squad has been valued at around half a billion Euros but that counted for nothing last time these two sides met, with Milan triumphing 3-2 in a classic match at the Bernabeu. Since then Madrid have given themselves more reason to win this game, losing 4-0 to third-tier side Alcorcon in the Spanish Cup.
The hosts are favourites for tonight`s game at 13/8 (bet $80 to win $130 profit), only slightly ahead of Madrid at 7/4. The draw is priced at 23/10. Real have drawn only one of their last thirteen games but Milan have drawn five over the same period.
The bookmakers see the teams as almost inseparably similar, and a 1-1 draw is the most likely result tonight at 11/2. Both sides are 10/1 to win 1-0 and the same price to win 2-1. The 0-0 draw is priced at 13/1 and a 2-0 win for either team is 14/1. 2-2 is 16/1.
Twenty-one year-old French striker Karim Benzema is favourite to open the scoring in the absence of reigning world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo at 13/2. After Benzema come Real`s Raul and Milan`s Filippo Inzaghi, the two greatest goalscorers in European club competition with 68 goals each, at 7/1. Also at 7/1 is twenty year-old Brazilian striker Pato, who scored the winning goal at the Bernabeu last time these sides met.
The half-time/full-time market is as close as the others, with Milan/Milan and Madrid/Madrid both at 4/1, along with draw/draw. Draw/Madrid and draw/Milan are 5/1 and Milan/draw and Madrid/draw are 14/1.
Tonight`s match is set to be another memorable one. Madrid have won the most European Cups of any any club with nine, followed by Milan with seven, and the sub-plot of Raul and Inzaghi vying for the title of all-time top goalscorer in this competition.
Madrid are third favourites to add another European crown to their long list of accomplishments at 6/1, but Milan are not rated as highly as in the past, and are well behind tonight`s visitors at 33/1.
