World Cup 2010: England Top Goalscorer Betting

England captain Steven Gerrard has been installed as favourite to finish the World Cup as his side`s top goalscorer following their qualification from Group C in second place. Gerrard is 9/4 (bet £40 to win £90 profit) with Coral and only he and Jermain Defoe have got on the scoresheet so far.
After an uninspiring campaign so far, England will hope their big guns can start firing in South Africa and the Liverpool skipper has lead by example, putting them ahead inside the first ten minutes against the USA. Since then, however, Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey have missed several chances, furthering concerns about weaknesses up front.
Defoe`s goal against Slovenia, which put England through to the knockout stages, has most likely earned him a start in the next match against Germany. He is 1/4 with William Hill to be in the eleven and now 23/10 with Paddy Power to finish as England`s top goalscorer. He has obviously made a good start and has looked dangerous every minute he has been on the pitch so far in the tournament.
Wayne Rooney, England`s great hope going into the competition, has been a huge disappointment, but the fans will surely believe he can get it together after such an incredible season for Manchester United. Rooney is 7/2 with Ladbrokes to top-score for the Three Lions but if he can`t recreate his club form against Germany, he may not have many more chances to find the net.
One player who always produces his best for his country is Peter Crouch, who has an excellent scoring record of 21 goals in 40 caps. He is 14/1 to outscore all of his team-mates, but seems to have fallen out of favour with manager Fabio Capello.
Frank Lampard will surely play and will most likely take penalties for England, so the midfielder could be a good bet at 12/1 with Sky Bet, as long as he continues to make his trademark runs into the box and is able to establish a rapport with Steven Gerrard.
Others worth mentioning are Joe Cole and Emile Heskey, at 33/1 and 40/1 with Sky Bet, but Heskey may have played his last game at the tournament and Joe Cole is another who has not enjoyed many minutes so far in South Africa.
England face Germany on Sunday and they will need to be at their very best if they are to reach the quarter finals this year.
